Shine by Lauren Myracle

Anything can happen in a small town. Anything.

Cat has been living her life alone. She has cut all ties to her friends and doesn't interact with anyone unless she has no over choice but to. This is how she has lived ever since Tommy.

“Because it's good for nothing," I said. keeping my eyes on Tommy. "Because one worthless piece of shit deserves another.”
― Lauren Myracle, Shine

When Cat's best friend Patrick is attacked, and it seems that no one is looking into who did it, Cat breaks out of her shell to try and find the person that beat Patrick into coma. The cops say that it seems to have been out of towners, but Cat knows better. She knows that cops won't look at anyone from town, afraid to make trouble.

“I felt sucker-punched. It wasn't God's fault Patrick had been treated worse than dirt, as I'd let myself believe. It was mine.”
― Lauren Myracle, Shine

So Cat looks at everyone, with one person in mind of who did it. Along the way she makes new and old friends and discover secrets about everyone, and when she finally discovers who did it, Cat is the most shocked at who it is.

“... and my brain put them together in that way brains sometimes do: pairing the ideas that shouldn't be paired, yet nonetheless were.”
― Lauren Myracle, Shine

Shine is great mystery book. The story of girl discovering herself, while trying to find out what happened to her friend. I'd give Shine four stars.

“Knowledge was more powerful than fear. Love was stronger than hate."
― Lauren Myracle, Shine
